The Global Forum on Fighting Corruption and Safeguarding Integrity is a multilateral gathering held every two years that brings together government representatives, specialists and academics from various parts of the world to discuss and enhance measures for fighting corruption. The primary objective of the Global Forum is to promote and facilitate international exchanges through periodic meetings and a permanent forum for debate.
The first meeting of the Global Forum on Fighting Corruption and Safeguarding Integrity between Legal and Safety Employees, an initiative of then US Vice-President Al Gore, took place in 1999, in Washington D.C. The goal of the Forum was to identify the causes of corruption and discuss effective methods for fighting the problem. The meeting stressed the need for immediate action and ongoing discussions.
The II Global Forum was held in The Hague, Netherlands, in 2001. Centered on the theme "Fighting Corruption by means of Integrity, Transparency and Responsibility," the Forum recognized the need to engage civil society, the private sector and the press in the development and implementation of effective strategies to fight corruption.
The III Global Forum, which took place in Seoul, South Korea, in 2003, was devoted to the theme "Growing Challenges, Shared Responsibilities." The Forum was centered on issues ranging from bribery, nepotism, money laundering and illegal transfers of assets to legal cooperation, sanction and control mechanisms, campaign financing and the role of governments in fostering transparency, among others.
The central theme of the IV Global Forum on Fighting Corruption will be "From Words to Deeds.” The event will take place from June 7-10, 2005, in Brasilia.
